thought should be abandoned if it wasn’t already. They went into the building and up to the second floor. “Here we are,” Mary said as she unlocked the door to her apartment and flipped on the light switch. They stepped into a room that was chilly and was lit by one dim bulb. There was one old, somewhat broken couch that leaned to one side. Facing the couch were a couple of ugly wooden chairs and a rickety rocking chair. A few toys were neatly stacked in a box in one corner. There was a doorway that led into a very small kitchen and a door that was open just enough Sam could see that it led into a tiny bathroom. Beside the couch was a crate being used as a small table. Near the door to the kitchen was an old bookcase that had the paint peeling from it. The bookcase was mostly full of small, tattered books for children. On the other side of the room was a chest of drawers with a broken mirror on top. The chest of drawers had a rusty pipe running from the top of it to a two-by-four that was standing upright. On this pipe hung some clothes. The room was small and sparsely furnished, but it was neat and clean. “Do you want me to take Emily into the bedroom?” Sam asked. “Actually, there is no bedroom,” Mary said, her 21
