“Maybe if I learned to play he would like me better.” “You don’t need to learn to play basketball so he will like you. There is no reason he shouldn’t like you,” Sam said. “But if I could be more like what he wanted, maybe he would.” Sam pulled her up onto his lap. “You don’t try to beat someone by playing their game, but by emphasizing your own strengths.” “What does that mean?” Emily asked. “It means you just need to be yourself.” “I like that,” Emily said. Sam played with Emily and Timmy all evening. When Timmy got fussy, he fed him a bottle. He found Emily to be a very bright young lady and she seemed to understand everything he said about basketball. He found himself talking to her about game strategy, offense and defense, much like he would to one of his friends. Before he knew it the evening was getting late and Judge Jensen was coming over. “It’s time for Emily to get some rest now. She and Timmy need to take a nap until their mother comes to get them.” “Can we have a story?” Emily asked. “Oh, sure,” Sam said when he realized Judge Jensen was looking at him, expecting him to answer the 14
