in. Marie later told her that many in the family
agreed to the sale because they didn’t want to
deal with Matthew in the future.

      The farm was purchased almost
immediately after it was put up for sale. Rachel
had cried the day she and her brothers and sisters
cleaned out the old house and divided up things.
Matthew said, “Only take things we can sell and
not some stupid sentimental junk.” By the time
they were done, her brothers and sisters and their
spouses would have nothing to do with her or
Matthew, and she couldn’t blame them.

      True to form, Matthew was angry about the
things she had chosen from her parents’ home.
They were simple things that meant a lot to her.
What probably angered him most was that he was
sure some of them were tokens of Jacob’s love
