came, her inheritance from the sale of her
parents’ farm, he took it from her. It was written
to her, so Matthew beat her until she gave it to
him, and then he illegally signed her name to it
so he could cash it. She had planned to use the
money to buy clothes for her children, pay bills,
buy food, and other things they so desperately
needed.
Left with two black eyes, a bloody nose, and
no inheritance, she went to Mother Davis and
told her of her plans to divorce Matthew. At first
Mother Davis tried to dissuade her, but Rachel
