Davis had to agree. When Matthew returned
from cashing the check, he brought presents to
try to appease Rachel. But she threw them back
at him and told him to get out of the house.
When Rachel worked up courage to file for
divorce, she found he again had the upper hand.
He was always more interested in money than
anything else, and he was afraid she would end
up getting half of the farm. He reasoned that if
he filed for divorce first, she would have no right
to anything.
He also had money for a lawyer and she
didn’t. Ironically, it was her inheritance money
he used. He told her he would take the children
if she tried to get any money from him. Wanting
to get him totally out of her life, she agreed that
she wouldn’t go after any property if he would
