ignored it and was off to the second hole.
Suddenly, I lost my nerve. So as I reached the
second hole, I yelled, “Fire in the hole!” and just
dumped the whole bucketful down. At this point, I
would say all of something broke loose, but my mother
told me to never swear, so I won’t say it. But it really
did.
There was screaming and cussing from down in
the hole. The problem was the voices sounded a bit too
familiar. Buster jumped up and down. “Boy, you made
Satan really mad this time!”
Butch got a scared look on his face. “What if he
comes right out that hole after us?”
Buster agreed it was a concern. They felt we
ought to get some sticks so if he did come after us, we
could “give him a good whippin’.”
It was at the instant that we turned to find some
sticks that I saw my mother coming up from the front of
the cellar, a good “whippin’” branch of her own in her
