would be full of weeds again the day after I had weeded
it. Sometimes I almost imagined Grandma went out
there and planted them at night to give me something to
do.
I was assigned to fork grass out that had crept in
along the edges. As I worked, I would see the skunk
now and then and was careful not to disturb her. She
seemed to have grown used to us and went about her
business as if we didn’t exist.
Grandma was busy raking rocks from the edge of
the garden while I dug out the grass. This was another
thing that always got me. We would take every rock
out of the garden, but the next time I worked the soil,
there would be hundreds more. You can’t tell me that
rocks don’t have babies.
There was one thing that Grandma hated more
than weeds and rocks. Since she lived on a corner lot,
dogs liked to cut through her yard, and when they did,
they liked to leave a deposit as payment. More than
