get his curly hair combed straight down the center of
his back. He immediately left his whole present for
Grandma, plus quite a bit more, lying in a pile on the
sidewalk as he took off for home, yipping wildly.

      “And don’t come back!” Grandma yelled after
him, shaking her rake furiously.

      Grandma looked down and saw the little present
left for her and called me over. “Oh, Tommy, I’ve got a
little job for you.”

      I knew there was no use arguing. I hated pulling
grass from the garden, but being the dog doo doer was
worse.

      I was back at the garden, hard at work, when a big
black lab came into the yard. Before Grandma even
had a chance to say anything, he busied himself
watering her favorite rose bush. The rose bush was a
small one that was right by the fence bordering
Grandma’s property with Mrs. Crabby’s. I knew that
bush only too well. Grandma was very protective of it.
