       complete nine laps.
              Coach had us line up at the
       starting line.  He pulled out his
       stopwatch.  “The first one done
       gets one free penalty without going
       through spats.”
              I thought that would be a good
       prize.  I had already been through
       spats a couple of times for being
       late for practice, crawling through
       the guys' legs, and having them
       take a whack at me.  Larry, the
       heavyweight, had caught me hard
       enough to roll me twice.
              I was determined to win, and
       the minute Coach said, “Go!” I
       was off to a quick lead.  I held it,
       and by the middle of my second
