As the girls made a mad dash
to ask someone they would prefer
rather than be assigned someone
they didn’t want, I was sure I
would soon be the only boy left
sitting on the bleachers. And very
quickly, that was the case. Soon
every other boy had been chosen,
and I was sitting alone on the boys’
side of the gym. I was looking
down so I wouldn’t have to face
the events unfolding around me.
Then I thought I heard someone
say my name.
