I may have grown taller, but
not all of me had increased at the
same rate. My self-confidence had
been left far behind and would take
years to catch up. My shoe size
had increased three sizes, and my
feet never seemed to cooperate
with the rest of me, always having
their own agenda instead. More
than once in gym class, I would
come down the court with a
basketball, only to tumble over my
own feet, sprawling onto the floor
to the laughter of the other
students. Or I might go for a loose
ball that was heading out of
bounds, only to pummel myself
headlong into the bleachers.
