only three months long, but I grew
almost six inches.
I hadn’t realized I had been
growing, but I knew no matter how
much I ate, I was always hungry.
Granted, we worked hard on the
farm, hauling hay and changing
pipe, but even though I drank a
gallon or two of milk per day and
ate mounds of meat and potatoes,
my appetite was never satisfied. I
assumed it was all caused by work.
But by the end of summer, I felt
strange, and I was so awkward I
could trip over my own shadow.
I had also noticed that my pants
were beginning to look like
knickers, and my ankles would
always have cuts and bleed from
