hay. I hadn’t thought about the
fact that I was growing because I
was too absorbed in trying to
understand why I was so awkward.
Oh, I was awkward
before—that’s why girls didn’t
want to dance with me—but it
increased about tenfold. Even my
brothers noticed and teased me.
But the reason for my
awkwardness became apparent on
the first day of gym class when our
teacher filled out our statistics.
“My heavens, Johnson,” the
teacher said. “You’ve gained
almost fifty pounds.” When he
measured my height, he gasped.
