I hesitated one more time, so
she continued. “Since you’re so
strong and athletic, I thought you’d
be the perfect dance partner. I’ll
be able to teach you and make sure
you ace the class.”
Her compliment and words of
assurance did the trick. I later
learned from her roommates that it
wasn’t me she necessarily wanted,
but any boy. She’d had the teacher
sign a card for each of my
roommates so if one of us turned
her down, she could try another. It
just happened that I was the one
