I handed him another one, and
again he took it as gently as any horse
I had ever worked with. I was still
cautious, and wanted to make sure I
didn’t let my guard down. I petted
him, and he nuzzled me for some
more.
But I thought maybe it was time
to let him go. The other horses were
now milling around. They could
smell him, and he could smell them,
and they whinnied to each other.
I went around to the other side of
the trailer, made sure everything was
in position, and pulled the twine
holding the bar. When I heard the bar
snap free, he must have heard it too.
He let out a whinny, then a snort, and
immediately started backing up.
