       the shower, and then we bandaged

       my head.


               When I went the next evening to

       feed, Dader’s pen stood empty.


       Brenda was already there, her hand

       now in a cast.  When I asked her what


       she had done with him, she said,

       “He’s gone.  That’s all that matters.”

               All the memories of Dader came

       back as I hung up the phone from


       talking with Brenda.  I changed my

       clothes and prepared to meet the men


       bringing in the new horse.  It had

       been seven months since Brenda had


       gotten rid of Dader, but it was as

       fresh in my mind as if it had just
