That was when the pain in my

shoulder engulfed me. It was so bad I

started to shake. I wondered if it was

broken. Still, my reasoning told me it

probably wasn’t, or I would not have

been able to swing the fork like I had,

or to have climbed the gate.

As I lay there on the ground, in

the light dusting of November snow,

an old man was suddenly standing

       over me.

               “Son, are you all right?”

I nodded, and he knelt down

beside me. “I watched the horse

attack you from out my window.

You are lucky to be alive.”

He pointed to the house next door

and told me that was where he lived.

“I came to help as fast as I could, but

it was all over by the time I arrived.”
