That was when the pain in my
shoulder engulfed me. It was so bad I
started to shake. I wondered if it was
broken. Still, my reasoning told me it
probably wasn’t, or I would not have
been able to swing the fork like I had,
or to have climbed the gate.
As I lay there on the ground, in
the light dusting of November snow,
an old man was suddenly standing
over me.
“Son, are you all right?”
I nodded, and he knelt down
beside me. “I watched the horse
attack you from out my window.
You are lucky to be alive.”
He pointed to the house next door
and told me that was where he lived.
“I came to help as fast as I could, but
it was all over by the time I arrived.”
