enough to twist his body one way and
mine the other. His hooves came
down so close to me that I felt them
brush against my skin.
The blow caused him to tremble
and pause for the few seconds I
needed to scramble to my feet. But I
was still cornered, and once again he
rose to strike. But from a standing
position, I could defend myself much
better.
With my mind now clear, I
considered using the prongs of the
fork to force him away, but I hated to
mar this beautiful animal. It was not
because I felt any good will toward
him, but it was because he belonged
to Brenda, and I loved my job. So
instead, as he rose to strike once
