edges of the garden. I thought I was doing well, but
Grandma said that at the rate I was working, I’d get the
grass out of the garden in time to cover it up for winter.
I thought that I had moved more grass than she had
moved rocks because I hadn’t been chasing dogs. But,
of course, I didn’t dare say it.
Grandma told me to keep working while she got
lunch ready. It seemed like forever before she called
me to the kitchen. I climbed the old rickety stairs to the
back door and was careful not to let the screen door
slam behind me. I was dog tired, and I still had a lot of
the day to work. Grandma had a pitcher of lemonade
full of ice cooling on the table. I couldn’t keep myself
from staring at it, and I thought my drool was going to
drown me before she finally poured me a glass.
The glass frosted when she poured the lemonade
in, and when I reached out and took it, it felt nicely cold
in my hand. I took a deep drink, but when the
lemonade hit my stomach, I knew I had made a big
