and was back out working grass out of the garden. Two
more dogs came along that afternoon. One started into
Grandma’s yard, saw her, and turned right around. The
other got close enough to sniff Grandma’s favorite rose
before she was after it with the rake. She missed it, but
it jumped so fast and hard it flipped clear onto its back.
I had nearly finished along another edge when she
told me we were going to go to the five-and-dime. She
wanted to go there before my dad came to get me so I
could help her carry her purchases home. She gave me
a wet wash cloth to sponge the dirt from my pants and
face, grabbed her purse, tied on a nice garden hat, and
we were on our way.
When we arrived at the five-and-dime, Sam
Jackson, who Grandma sometimes called Mr.
Hardware, was behind the counter. We walked right up
to the counter, and Grandma had that look in her eye
that showed she meant business. She slapped the bell
on the counter even though Mr. Jackson was right in
