slices and put it on the cheese. She topped it off with a
few pickles. Very few people could beat Grandma’s
pickles. She buttered another piece of bread, slapped it
on top, and handed the finished sandwich to me. I took
a big bite and felt the hot onion and dill pickle attack
back, so I quickly washed it down with lemonade.
Grandma cleared her throat, and I looked at her.
She removed her hat, and then I remembered. She
bowed her head and I bowed mine as she blessed the
food. She had hardly said “amen” before I had
devoured the whole sandwich. She fixed me another,
commenting on how I should taste my food when I eat
it. When I finished that one, I felt I could probably
have eaten more, but my parents always told me not to
be a pig. Besides, Grandma almost always had cookies
for desert. In this I wasn’t disappointed. She handed
me two big oatmeal cookies filled with raisins, and she
refilled my glass of lemonade.
It seemed far too soon that I had finished eating
