barns. When I told my dad that I
would be happy to help at home for
the week, he looked at me
curiously. He knew I usually liked
school.
“Is everything okay?” he
asked.
“Sure,” I responded. “I’m
pulling straight A’s in all my
classes. I can afford the time to
help.”
My mom called the school and
got me excused, and I spent the
rest of the week loading hay and
stacking it in the barn. But on
Friday, my dad couldn’t be on the
farm to work, so he felt I might as
well go back to school. I tried to
