“I didn’t know you sold flowers.”
“I don’t anymore. I’m all out.”
“Where did you get flowers to sell?”
“It’s a long story.”
I settled back to listen, because when Buster said
that, I knew I would hear it anyway, and it would be more
than a little interesting.
It seemed that Buster’s father had been approached
by the local VFW to see if he could help put flags on the
graves of the veterans on the Saturday before Memorial
Day. He said he was busy, but had volunteered Buster to
help in his place.
Buster knew of a million things he would rather be
doing on a Saturday, but he didn’t dare tell his father so.
Thus the day arrived, and he found himself receiving
directions from an old VFW member on where to place the
flags. They were getting near the end when they met the
groundskeeper.
The groundskeeper commented on how nice it was
that a young person would volunteer to come help, then
asked Buster if he would have time to also help clear all of
the flowers from the graves the next Saturday. Buster was
