Deanne brought up the list of those owing tuition, but
she did not find any name matching what the man had
given her for his daughter. Deanne informed him of that.
He seemed quite relieved. “You know,” he laughed,
“I was sure I had paid it, yet she told me I needed to send
her a check for the whole amount because I hadn’t. I am
always very careful to make sure I keep up on the bills she
says I owe. I just couldn’t imagine that I had let something
like tuition get clear to the middle of the semester and not
be paid.
“You know,” he joked, “I kind of think my daughter
is a bit absentminded. I swear I end up paying twice for
half of the things she owes. She can’t seem to remember
from one minute to the next what I’ve paid, and what I
haven’t. It seems like every time I turn around she is
asking for me to pay for something I have already paid.
“Why, last year, I could swear I already paid the
$2000 for her housing. But I couldn’t find any records, so
I wrote another check. You know, if she were my age, I
would think she had dementia or something.”
He laughed and laughed at that. He continued to
joke about it for a while. Finally, he decided it was time to
