go, so he asked one more favor. “You know,” he said, “she
has a birthday coming up. Maybe I ought to put an extra
$100 on her account that she can use at the book store or
something. Could you do that?”
Deanne assured him that she could, and typed the
girl’s name into the computer. But the only listing was not
what she expected.
“Sir, the only young lady I show under that name is
not a student, and the account is not active.”
“Obviously I would know if she were there,” the man
laughed. “I mean, after all, I have paid for her to go there
for three years, and she is in the middle of her junior year.
Maybe you should recheck it.”
Deanne felt a bit perplexed. “Will you spell it for
me?”
The father spelled it out, and it was the same way
Deanne had typed it in. “Sir,” she informed him, “the only
account I show under that name has not been active for
three years. The only payment on the account is an
application fee of $20. It shows that the student was
accepted, but we show no record of her ever coming to
school. She has never registered for any class or
