     positions, and we felt that was the safest place in case     of an emergency exit.  The other three folded     themselves into the back seat.            Buster eased the car away from the curb, and it     immediately died.  He laughed nervously as he restarted     it.  The starter whirred a few times before it caught.     The engine fired and died.  Buster kept trying, and just     about the time the starter was slowing, indicating the     battery was losing power, our hopes of getting out of     this tin can were dashed when the car roared to life.  Of     course, when I say roared, I really mean banged,     because it clanked, chugged, and backfired.  But     eventually, we were moving.            We stopped at the first stop sign, and Buster had     no sooner eased us out into the middle of the     intersection than the car stalled again.  There we sat for     about ten minutes while Buster attempted to start it.     But this time the starter did nothing but whir.            Luckily, we lived in a small town, and the number     of cars on main street in any given hour could be     counted on one hand, unless, of course, it was fair                                       26
