feet next to Brenda just as Dader
started coming down toward her.
Brenda threw her hand over her face
to protect herself. I swung the shovel
with all my strength, catching him in
the side of his shoulder. It twisted his
body just enough so that he mostly
missed her, though one hoof struck
her arm.
Dader crashed to his knees. I
dropped the shovel, grabbed Brenda
under each arm, and pulled her back
to the fence while Dader was
scrambling to his feet again. I
thought he would go to the other end
of the corral, but he rose to strike
again. I stepped up between him and
Brenda and scrambled to reach for the
shovel. I grabbed it, but was unable
to use it for defense before his hooves
