when I first saw him,” I told her.
“And when I was trying to get the
gate shut and he slid to a stop that
first time like you saw him do, I
thought I was dead. But it’s like . . .”
I paused, not knowing how to put it
into words.
“I’ll tell you what it’s like,”
Brenda said. “It’s like he sees you as
his savior from the dark world he was
in. But I think there is even more.”
That made me curious. I stopped
brushing him and climbed through
the fence. The horses finished their
grain and moved off to graze.
Cashmere begged another apple off of
me, and then I told him to go graze,
so he started eating grass close by,
not wanting to be far away.
