brush, leaving him with Brenda, he


       started to snort.

               When I brought the grain back, I


       suggested that she feed him some of

       it.  She did, and he calmed back


       down.  I still didn’t dare let her climb

       through the fence by him, so I did,


       and I poured out the piles the way I

       always did.  The other horses came


       running to get their share.

               I brushed him while he ate.


       Brenda walked over and flopped the


       tailgate down on her pickup, and sat

       down on it.


               “He is really a good-looking

       horse,” she said.  “A whole lot better-


       looking than he appeared in that dark

       stall of his.  But what I really can’t


       believe is how gentle he is with you.”

               “I’ll admit he scared me to death
