already approaching the pasture gate.

The horses had come running when

they saw Brenda’s pickup because I

drove it on days I had to haul hay,

and they thought it must be time for

       their grain.

I pulled my pickup to a quick

stop, but before I could get out,

       Brenda had reached the fence.

       Cashmere went crazy, squealing,

rearing, and shaking his head. The

other horses backed away from him

       and away from the fence.

Brenda fell back in surprise and

retreated behind her pickup. As I

came up near her, she turned to me.

“I thought you said he was gentle!”

“I said he was gentle with Hannah

and me,” I replied. “You stay here

       and watch.”
