already approaching the pasture gate.
The horses had come running when
they saw Brenda’s pickup because I
drove it on days I had to haul hay,
and they thought it must be time for
their grain.
I pulled my pickup to a quick
stop, but before I could get out,
Brenda had reached the fence.
Cashmere went crazy, squealing,
rearing, and shaking his head. The
other horses backed away from him
and away from the fence.
Brenda fell back in surprise and
retreated behind her pickup. As I
came up near her, she turned to me.
“I thought you said he was gentle!”
“I said he was gentle with Hannah
and me,” I replied. “You stay here
and watch.”
