“You know,” he joked, “I kind of think my
daughter is a bit absentminded. I swear I end
up paying twice for half of the things she owes.
She can’t seem to remember from one minute to
the next what I’ve paid, and what I haven’t. It
seems like every time I turn around she is
asking for me to pay for something I have
already paid.
“Why, last year, I could swear I already
paid the $2000 for her housing. But I couldn’t
find any records, so I wrote another check. You
know, if she were my age, I would think she
had dementia or something.”
He laughed and laughed at that. He
continued to joke about it for a while. Finally,
he decided it was time to go, so he asked one
more favor. “You know,” he said, “she has a
