I know I am not perfect, but some
of my friends do say no one is stranger
than me. I did, however, think long
about what she said. Often we treat
strangers better than we treat those we
love most. I know, sadly, that I am
often more congenial to people I don’t
know than I am to my own family who
are most important to me.
With the directions from the gas
station attendant, we were soon at the
wedding dinner. Everyone, hungry and
impatient, eyed us suspiciously as we
entered, now almost an hour late. I was
quick to tell them the story of the old
lady.
My older brother scoffed. “Right.
On your wedding day, you stopped to
be the good boy scout and help an old
