Chapter 5 l Basketball Sam was already heavy into basketball practice when he started babysitting at the Women’s Crisis Center. He wanted to get in as many hours as he could before the game schedule started and that was the second week of November. He found, however, that even if he hurried right from practice, without even showering, he was late and Judge Jensen would scowl at him. If he showered he was always at least a half hour late, and to her that was unacceptable. He decided he needed to talk to his coach. Sam nervously approached his coach. He knew his coach wouldn’t like having him leave before conditioning ended each night, but he didn’t know what else to do. He thought maybe he could make it up some other way. Coach Hamilton listened as Sam told the story and explained why he needed to leave early. When he finished the coach sat there pondering. A big smile spread on his face. Coach Hamilton was one to expect double payment if something had to be given up. 53
