of books, brought them over and set them on the floor by Tom. She first chose My Day at the Zoo from the stack. Tom started to read. “We are going to the zoo today. I love to go to the zoo. There are many things to see. There are elephants and tigers...” Emily curled up against Tom and laid her head against him so she could see the pictures. Tom had to hold the book far away so Timmy couldn’t keep pulling on the pages. He read one book after another from the stack until Emily got drowsy and put her head on his lap. Timmy, too, had gotten quiet and was lying peacefully in his arms sucking his pacifier. In the middle of one story, Tom could hear Emily’s soft, steady breathing and knew she was asleep. He looked down at Timmy in time to see his eyes flutter one last time before he too fell asleep. Tom realized how tired he was himself and leaned back against the chair that was behind him. It wasn’t long until he drifted off also. Judge Jensen looked at them. Tom was a natural with children even though he tended to think they were annoying. She smiled to herself as she watched them sleeping. They had been asleep a long time when Tom felt a weight lift off his lap. It disturbed his sleep and he sat 48
