Chapter 4 l Tom’s Turn When Tom came into the Women’s Crisis Center he was wearing sunglasses and whistling. He had a carefree air about him. If someone didn’t know he was here to fill a sentence, they would never have guessed. As he went to the desk to sign in, Judge Jensen was there to greet him. No words passed between them, but as she glared over her glasses she pointed to her watch and Tom got the drift that she didn’t like people to be late. He signed in and then went and stood in front of Emily. “Hey kiddo,” he said pointing at her in an Elvis Presley imitation. “You are the lucky winner who gets to spend the evening with me.” Emily stood up and put her hands on her hips. “Hold on a minute here. We better start in first gear. Justin said I had to be careful of strangers and he said no one was stranger than you.” Tom laughed. “Oh, he did, did he?” The three young men often played jokes on each other and Tom realized Justin had set him up for that one. 42
