locked in a closet, but I thought better of it. As an
infuriated Harry headed for the gym, the parents
started arriving to pick up their sons. They were
just in time, I thought, to save the boys’ lives.
Those whose parents were late picking them up
caught one look at Harry’s purplish-red face, and
they were quick to catch rides with the other boys.
I thought this might dampen Harry’s
exuberance as a scout leader, but Harry wasn’t
anything if he wasn’t persistent. A day hadn’t
passed before he put a new doorknob higher on the
scout closet, one he made sure could not be locked
from the outside. He moved all the religious
pictures to one wall so he could load a wall with
scouting pictures on Tuesday nights. It made the
room look lopsided on Sundays when the scout
pictures were stored away in the closet. But when
the Sunday school teacher who taught in there
wanted to put her pictures back, she quickly backed
down when she realized Harry had already been
pushed too far.
The problem was, the boys had only begun to
push. Harry was sure all he needed to “get the
boys with him” was a good campout. After the
exciting scout night, I thought it might be good for
them to plan it for a time when I could join them to
