the boxes down. Grandma let out a big sigh. “Why,
when I was a little girl, I could carry shot like that for
ten miles without tiring. And you take someone like
George Washington. He wasn’t hardly a man when he
threw a silver dollar clear across the Potomac River.”

      “Did you see him do it?” I asked.
      “Of course not.”
      “Then how did you know he did it?”
      “Because everybody says he did.”
      “Well, everybody says a lot of things that I don’t
believe.”
      That was something Grandma always said herself.
She looked at me, and I could see she was about to say
something about me being too big for my britches, but I
think she knew her stories of how hard it was when she
was small might have been a bit too exaggerated.
      When we got to her house, Grandma quickly put
me back to work digging grass. She took extra time
coming outside, and when she did come out, she had a
