       had.  Was it some kind of abuse, or

       was it just neglect?


               But, through all of my petting and

       rubbing him, never once did he make


       an aggressive move.  When he

       finished his apple, he nuzzled me


       again, begging for another one.

               “All right,” I said, “but just one


       more for now.  I don’t want you

       getting a tummy ache.”  I pulled out


       the apple, and he carefully reached


       for it.

               The other horses came lumbering


       up, finally making it back from the

       other end of the pasture.  As they


       approached, he looked at me like he

       was asking my permission.  I gave


       him a little push.  “Well, go run

       again, if that’s what you want.”
