moved her in here so we can feed her

a little grain to sharpen her up before

I have her bred.”

I offered Patches an apple, and

she happily took it. I scratched her

behind her ears while she ate, and she

turned her head so I didn’t miss any

spots.

We moved to the next corral, and

a big black quarter horse lumbered

up. “This horse is Jackie,” Brenda

explained. “She is supposed to have

been bred, but I’m sure she should

have had her baby by now, so I think

it never took. She is fat enough to

have twins, but I think it is just that:

fat. I’ll probably have her bred again

when I have Patches bred.”

I fed Jackie an apple and petted

her nose briefly before we moved on.
