At this point, I interjected, “Bishop, if you
want to release me from my assignment and put me
in as scoutmaster, that’s fine.”
He looked at me with astonishment. “You
knew?”
“I’ve had a feeling all afternoon that is what
should happen. And I’m not sure who else could
work with these boys.”
He smiled a relieved smile. “And you don’t
have a problem with that?”
I shook my head. “I must admit, I have
doubts about my ability to deal with some of the
challenges of being a scoutmaster. But if I can
help these boys grow to be good, honorable men,
there could be nothing of greater value I could do.
And if I am doing what God wants, it doesn’t really
matter what my assignment is. If he wanted me to
be the person to hold the door at church, then I
would hope that I would say yes and work to be the
best door holder He had ever had.”
The bishop smiled and got up to shake my
hand. “I think you will be the best scoutmaster,
too.”
As I left his office, the doubts about the last
statement filled my mind with a storm of concern.
Eighteen boys is a lot of boys, especially these
20
