Search and Rescue group that directed the
Klondike competition had lost a snow machine.
They would have lost more if they hadn’t
braved the inferno to get the pickups and
Suburbans away. When I talked to the Search and
Rescue director to offer my apologies, he said,
“The only good that came from it was that we were
able to show the boys what NOT to do.”
An emergency meeting of the scout
committee and the parents was called for Sunday.
One father expressed the opinion of the other
parents. “I’m not against Harry and all. He’s a
good man. It’s just that we feel our boys would be
a whole lot safer if you can keep Harry away from
them.”
In addition, a couple of days later, we
received a certified letter from the scout office
saying that if we didn’t change our troop
leadership, they would revoke our charter.
The decision was made, with Harry’s
agreement, that we needed to find another
scoutmaster. But who could it be? Very few
would take on the challenge of eighteen boys,
especially these eighteen boys. We had pretty much
exhausted our list of candidates. The Bishop said
