affectionately called Granny, had taken her husband’s
job in the mines, working alongside the men to take
care of her family. Butch and Buster’s father also
worked the mines, but he wanted something better for
his family.

      When he received a job offer to come to Idaho
and work in construction, he decided to take it. But
during the week they were packing to head west, Butch
and Buster’s mother was killed in an accident, so
Granny decided to sell her home and join her son’s
family for the trip west to help make up for the loss of
the children’s mother.

      Granny was a no-nonsense lady that wasn’t afraid
of anybody or anything. She stood over six feet tall and
smoked like a wood stove with a plugged-up flue. I
wasn’t used to being around smoking, so I usually
stayed outside when I visited them.

      The home they bought, right by our cellar, was an
old, long building with a cement floor that had been
