front of the women. The piles of bad potatoes on the
ground were then scraped out of the cellar with a
tractor.

      The women cutting the potatoes would grab a
potato from the good pile on the table and draw it
across the knife toward themselves, cutting it in two.
They would then drop the two potato pieces into the
gunny sack. They could do this quickly and not get cut.
Once, when no one was looking, I tried it and almost
amputated my hand.

       John, my oldest brother, would take the sacks off
when they were full and throw them onto the truck
where Jason, the next oldest, would stack them. Others
of us would try to keep the table full, using potato forks
to throw potatoes onto the cutting table.

      I would take my turn, trying to be as helpful as I
could, but I would soon be shooed out of the way so
someone bigger could load them. I was always given
another assignment, only to be given still another
