biggest of these that was the cause for a
comment by my older brother, “John”.
“You know,” he said, “it’s too bad
that this drift isn’t a big chunk of ice so
the snow plow couldn’t get through it.
That way we would never have to go to
school because the bus would not have
any way to turn around. Maybe we
ought to soak it with water or
something.”
Being only ten years old and not
terribly inclined to go to school, I
grabbed hold of his idea. After chores
were done, everyone else returned to
the warmth of the house to enjoy the
day out of school. But I went to the
garden shed and hauled hoses by the
dozens out to our barn. I stretched
them out to the road, connecting them
