A Pile Of Snow

It had snowed off and on for more
than a week, and we had been out of
school for most of it. But to add to
that, the wind had kicked up the night
before and had blown drifts around
anything that formed an obstacle to its
swirling force.
Our house was the last house on the
road, miles from anyone else, and the
only house for dozens of miles over a
wide open, sage brush dessert. This
gave the wind free rein to formulate
mountain-sized drifts that towered over
20 feet tall near our barn. It was the
