unsuccessfully to avoid each other.
The girls complained that the
boys couldn’t lead, and the boys
complained that the girls couldn’t
follow, but in reality, neither could
move in unison. The forced
practice continued, and once we
were practiced enough to minimize
collisions, our teachers increased
the music tempo. At once, the
class devolved from a gentle game
of bumper cars to an all-out crash-
up derby, with each couple trying
to hospitalize everyone else
without killing themselves in the
process.
We would repeat this bizarre
human ritual each time with a
