     heart go yonder.’ ”            Whitman frowned.  “I think the statement is,     ‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder.’ ”            Jim defiantly shook his finger at Whitman.  “You     think of it your way and I’ll think of it mine.”            “But you’re wrong, Jim,” Eli insisted.  “I have     written to her every week, and today she is going to step     off of that boat and...”            “...and into your arms to dance off into the sunset to     live happily ever after,” Jim said, rolling his eyes.            “I didn’t say it was going to be perfect,” Eli replied.     “I was just saying we will finally be together again.”            “What if this here Molly don’t like it here?” Jim     asked.            Eli smiled.  “I’m sure she’ll love it.  I’ve been telling     her all about it, and she’s really excited to meet everyone.”            Eli could see by the look on Jim and Whitman’s     faces that they were still skeptical.  Northshore was a tough     town, full of lumberjacks, sailors, and only a few families.     The people were free and independent and spoke their     mind for good or bad.            Jim scowled.  “And what I think is that you ain’t told     that Molly everything about this place.  She might step off     of that boat, take one look around, and get herself right     back on it.”            “I told her the people here are different from people     back home, but that she will learn to love them like I     have,” Eli said.            Jim poked his young companion with his cane.  “So     what have you told her about me?”            Eli grinned and patted Jim on the shoulder.  “I told                                        4
