Chapter 1 The Package l “Come on, Jim! Hurry! Hurry!” Eli yelled back over his shoulder, as he hurried along. Jim came along, moving sprightly for an old man who walked with a cane. “I’m a-comin’. I’m a-comin’. I’m not as young as I once was, you know.” Eli was as giddy as a child waiting for Christmas. “This is the big day and I don’t want to be late.” Jim laughed sarcastically. “Late? Ha! You’re about two years late, if you ask me.” “Nobody asked you. You know I didn’t have a choice.” “You always have a choice. It’s just the consequences you don’t get to choose, once you make the choice.” “You know I would have brought her with me, if I had had the money,” Eli said. Jim shook his cane at his young friend. “And I know that anyone who would leave his fiancée to go to another country and work is more than a little bit crazy.” Eli was too absorbed in his excitement to pay attention to Jim. As Jim continued his barrage, Eli put his hand to his forehead and scanned the horizon. No ship was yet in sight, but, with the crooked shoreline, a ship could almost be at the harbor before it came into view. It was a typical May morning in Newfoundland.
