but just when I think I’ve heard them all, a new one crops up. Ali told me that her parents had purchased an old car for her because they had heard about Idaho’s frigid winters and didn’t want her to have to walk everywhere. She had decided to take a longer trip to Utah one weekend, and on the way back, she started having car problems. She said the lights were flickering, and all of the car’s electrical things were barely working. The wipers would hardly keep her window clear enough so she could see, and the heater fan had slowed until it was only sputtering. She luckily made it back to her apartment, but she had no sooner arrived there than the car died completely. She found a repair shop that could work on it, and talked a friend into helping her tow it there. The mechanic checked it over, and told her that the alternator was almost totally fried. He said it would have to be replaced. She asked him to hurry because it was awfully cold, and she didn’t want to walk any more than she had to. After a week, the mechanic finally called and told 2
