Only one girl, Kathy, had ever played before. She had all brothers. The rest weren’t even sure what the purpose of the game was. “Can I be the quarterback?” Ellen asked. Another little girl named Shara, snickered. Shara was the wiriest of the girls and had long black hair, a short fuse, and an almost y- chromosome. “There aren’t any quarterbacks in basketball, Stupid,” Shara said to Ellen. “You either have to be a front, a back, or a middle.” “Close,” I said. “It’s forward, guard, or center.” “That’s what I said,” Shara snipped at me, and then lashed out with her foot, catching me hard in the shin. And that’s where the madness came in, as I knew immediately it was going to be long season. 19
